Indonesia Islamist leader protests 'unlawful' arrest
Updated
A radical Islamist leader detained in Indonesia over an armed attack on a rally for religious tolerance says his arrest is unlawful and is demanding immediate release.
Rizieq Shihab, leader of the Islamic Defenders Front, has been charged with assault, inciting violence and protecting a fugitive, and faces up to nine years' jail.
He is one of more than 50 front members rounded up in a crackdown after the June 1 incident, of whom only eight remain in custody.
His lawyer says the arrest is unlawful as the the police does not have enough preliminary evidence as required under Indonesian law for a detention.
