US Court declines Exxon Mobil Indonesian appeal
Updated
The United States Supreme Court has declined to hear an appeal by Exxon Mobil Corporation which is seeking to dismiss a lawsuit by 11 Indonesian villagers.
The lawsuit filed in 2001 alleges the company's security forces committed human rights abuses at a natural gas processing plant in Aceh province.
The lawsuit claims the company continued to retain the services of the security forces, who were exclusively members of the Indonesian military, despite being aware of the Indonesian army's poor record on human rights abuses.
The Supreme Court's action does not represent a ruling on the merits of the dispute.
It follows the recommendation of the US government by turning down the company's appeal without any comment.
