Australia urged to protect honey bee industry
Updated
The Australian Honey Bee Industry Council is urging all levels of government to take swift action on proposed measures to protect the industry.
A parliamentary committee has tabled a report on the honey bee and pollination industry.
It has recommended $US47 million be spent each year on bio-security measures and research to guard the industry against threats such as disease.
Lindsay Bourke from the Australian Honey Bee Industry Council says he welcomes the recommendations.
"This is very, very urgent, very very urgent for our horticultural industries, for all of Australia, for everybody who eats food," he said.
"One third of everything you eat is directly related to the humble honey bee."
