New Zealand is providing $US3 million to improve education in Vanuatu.

NZ's foreign minister, Winston Peters, says literacy and numeracy levels in Vanuatu compare poorly with other Pacific countries, and many children are missing out on education altogether.

He says New Zealand has a long history of supporting education in Vanuatu and is committed to providing future funding.

He says over 12 months, 25 primary schools will be upgraded and Vanuatu's Ministry of Education, will also be expanded.
