Opposition delays Australian budget measures
Updated
The Australian Government is stepping up its attack on the Opposition for delaying some parts of the budget.
The Opposition still has a majority in the Senate and wants a number of measures announced in this year's budget to undergo further scrutiny.
The Opposition has used the final weeks of its Senate majority to refer key budget measures to committees for scrutiny.
The Government leader in the Senate Chris Evans says it's a malicious destruction of the budget.
"If they said they were going to defeat them, then they could defeat them now, but no they're going to defer, they're going to hide behind process," Mr Evans said.
The Government insists the delays will cost $AU280 million, but those claims have been laughed off by the Opposition leader in the Senate, Nick Minchin.
"He's taking political rhetoric to an extraordinary degree," Mr Minchin said.
He says the Government could amend some pieces of legislation, to ensure revenue isn't lost.
