A book about suburban Melbourne in the 1970s has won this year's Miles Franklin literary award.
Steven Carroll was awarded Australia's highest literary honour for his novel 'The Time We Have Taken'.
Past winners of the award include Thomas Keneally, Peter Carey and Tim Winton.
Mr Carroll says he's overwhelmed to be joining such a prestigious list.
"I think it's unquestionably our big award," he said.
"It's the national award and it's also the one that publishers and agents, and big literary people oversees, all know about.
"It's instantly recognisable so hopefully these things help you and kick in and help you in your writing career and make sure it doesn't go bum," he said.
