Typhoon Fengshen is heading for the central islands of the Philippines with winds of up to 140 kilometres an hour.

Forcasters says the centre is about 180 kilometres east of the island of Samar and is expected to make landfall later today.

It is then expected to sweep back out into the Pacific Ocean on Sunday on a path that passes south of Okinawa.

There are warnings of flashfloods and landslides.
