Australian students head to PNG university games
Updated
Australian univeristy athletes are travelling to Papua New Guinea for the university games, despite a series of setbacks ahead of the start to the week-long event.
Our sports reporter, Tanya O'Shea, says it's the first time Papua New Guinea University Games have been open to outsiders, and Australia's Monash University, is sending 14 runners.
The games begin on Saturday, but there have been a number of hurdles to overcome, with the death of the games director a month ago and the Australian Government listing Port Moresby, where the students will compete, as a high caution area.
Clement Dusava has been appointed as interim organiser of the event, and he's told the PNG Courier newspaper that it's been a mammoth task dealing with the 1,000 athletes and officials who'll be attending.
The University Games started as a friendly comeptition between Lae's Unitech and the then Goroka Teachers College in the late 1980s.
It now draw students from seven Papua New Guinea universities and other tertiary institutions.
