Anti-government protests in Bangkok
Updated
Police in Thailand have been confronting thousands of demonstrators staging a major anti-government protest in the capital, Bangkok.
One column of demonstrators moved up to a barricade where they were met by riot police five-deep, pushing and shoving before sitting down in the middle of a road near the prime minister's office.
Thousands of police backed by water cannon and tear gas have been deployed to stop the protesters, whose four-week campaign has increased political tensions in the country at a time of faltering economic growth and soaring inflation.
