Australian charities are calling for a review of the national refugee policy saying it takes too long for applications to be processed.

A report from Oxfam on the experiences of asylum seekers criticises the current process of ministerial intervention which gives the Immigration Minister the final decision.

The Minister Chris Evans has ordered a review of this, saying he feels the position has too much power.

One of the authors of the Oxfam report, Kate Gauthier says the current system is difficult and costly.
