The Olympic torch is being carried through Tibet's capital Lhasa three months after riots there against Chinese rule.

Paramilitary police are keeping a close watch on the route that's been cordoned off from the public.

China Correspondent Stephen Mcdonell reports from Lhasa.

Amid heavy security the Olympic torch has started to weave its way through Lhasa a small handpicked crowd cheered euthusiasticly as the torch left the Norbulingka the old summer palace.

Many people not invited to participate have been asked to stay indoors until after the relay.

As the relay started, the Communist Party Secretary of Lhasa declared that the Olympic Torch would help to smash the Dalai Lama clique.

The relay will end at the Potala palace, the one time home of the Dalai Lama .
