Condemnation of police raid on Fiji Television
Updated
The Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) and the Fiji Media Council have condemned a police raid on a Fiji Television current affairs program.
On Sunday, Fiji police seized the mastertape of the Close Up program -- featuring an interview by Anish Chand and Suva lawyer Rajendra Chaudhry -- saying they were given a tip-off that it allegedly contained comments in breach of the public orders act.
PINA has issued a statement saying the raid was unwarranted - a sentiment echoed by the head of the media council, Daryl Tarte.
"As far as I am concerned, as chair of the media council, I can not condone this action because to me it is interference in media freedom and an example of official censorship," he said.
Police say they will announce on Tuesday what charges will be laid over the interview.
