Fiji regime blames Australia, NZ for forum suspension

Updated June 24, 2008 19:51:13

Fiji's interim government has confirmed it won't work with the pacific forum working group because it is upset with the travel bans imposed by Australia and New Zealand.

The forum was working with the interim Fiji government to help restore democracy to the country.

A spokesman for the interim government, Major Neumi Leweni, has told Radio Australia's Pacific Beat program the travel bans are making it difficult for the interim government to complete preparations in time for the March 2009 election deadline.

"Australia and New Zealand have placed travel bans on a lot of government officials and ministers and whoever is part of government," he said.

"So they haven't really shown anyway that they will change or assist somehow and that is why the decision has been made."
