NZ launches Pacific development strategy

New Zealand's foreign minister, Winston Peters, says his government's new Pacific development strategy will ensure a focussed and effective approach to aid work in the region.

Launching the strategy in parliament, Mr Peters said New Zealand will spend more than $US1.5 billion over eight years in official development assistance to the Pacific.

He says the Pacific remains New Zealand's main development focus, accounting for 70 per cent of the country's bilateral aid, and more than 50 per cent of its total aid.

Mr Peters says the Pacific Strategy acknowledges New Zealand's place in the world as a Pacific nation and outlines the future shape of assistance to its Pacific neighbours.
