Scheme launched in Australia to standardise fish names
Updated
A scheme has been launched to standardise the names of fish in Australia's $US2.38 billion seafood industry.
Sydney Fish Market and its eight seafood retailers are the first to be certified under the Australian Fish Names Brand Scheme.
Our reporter, Siobhan Moylan, says the scheme is a world first, and aims to give just one name to each of Australia's thousands of individual fish breeds.
The market's managing director, Graham Turk, says the scheme is all about reducing confusion for consumers.
"What it means is, that consumers will be able to be confident that the fish that they're buying, is in fact the fish they're expecting to buy," he said.
Although the initiative has begun in the Australian state of New South Wales, those in the industry hope fish mongers across the country will embrace the new scheme.
