Computer hackers target Marshall Islands
Updated
Marshall Islands has come under attack from computer hackers.
The hackers brought Marshall Island's email traffic to a standstill on Tuesday, launching a so-called "zombie" attack on the nation's only Internet service.
Using computers taken over by viruses, the hackers flooded the Internet provider with spam emails, causing a complete shutdown of email communication into the country.
The government-owned National Telecommunications Authority (NTA) says it was hit with a sudden four-fold increase in incoming email.
More than 18 hours after the initial attack on Tuesday morning, the incoming email service to the monopoly provider had still not been restored.
It is the first such cyber attack on the Pacific nation, which has a population of around 55,000.
