Security is on high alert across Pakistan as polling began in 28 by-elections.

Polling is taking place in five parliamentary constituencies and 23 provincial assembly seats.

Elections for these seats in february were either delayed because of unrest or because candidates who won them had also won other seats.

Election for the parliamentary seat in the eastern city of Lahore has been postponed by the Supreme Court after the government lodged an appeal against the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif.

Mr Sharif leader of a party within the ruluing coalition was barred because of previous criminal convictions.

The election commission says there have been no untoward incidents since polling started.
