Singapore would be ruined by opposition: Lee
Updated
Singapore's founding father, Lee Kuan Yew, says the opposition would ruin the city-state's achievements in five years if they ever gained power.
Mr Lee has warned Singaporeans against voting in the opposition "in a moment of fickleness or just sheer madness".
He says Singapore does not have natural resources, but its extraordinary performance and existence depends upon a system - but if that system is eroded, then the country would lose everything.
The opposition has only two seats in a parliament dominated by the People's Action Party, which has been in power since 1959.
Local and international civil rights groups have criticised the government for cracking down on dissenters and political activists.
