Heat stress concern for Australian Olympians
Updated
The Australian Olympic Team Doctor says heat stress will be the biggest health concern at the Beijing Olympic Games.
In August, temperatures in the Chinese host cities of Beijing and Shanghai are often over 40 degrees Celsius with high humidity.
Australian pre-games training camps for outdoor sports are now being held in heat tents or at sultry places like the northern cities of Darwin and Townsville.
The medical director of the Australian Olympic Team, Dr Peter Baquie says heat exhaustion is difficult to treat.
"The combined factor of temperature plus humidity will be particularly stressing for those outdoor endurance athletes," he said.
