PNG telecommunication provider links up
Updated
Papua New Guinea's telecommunication provider Telikom and Irish mobile phone company Digicel have finally interconnected.
Our reporter in Port Moresby, Firmin Nanol, says the interconnection between Telikom PNG and Digicel occurred from midnight, fulfilling a promise by the companies to interconnect this week.
The move will enable Telikom's B Mobile and fixed line users to call Digicel customers and vice versa.
A Digicel spokeswoman, Marina Van der Vlies, says it gives people the freedom to choose better telephone networks.
''Finally people have the choice to choose whatever network they would like," she said.
"So for the first time whether you are using a Digicel, B mobile or a Telikom fixed line, you could call anybody''.
Under the new arrangement, calls could be made anywhere from PNG, where there is Telikom and Digicel network coverage.
It is something people have wanted to do since Digicel entered PNG in July last year.
