Australian govt holds 'community cabinet meeting' in Queensland

Australia's Federal cabinet has opted for a change of scenery and has travelled north this winter.

As Melissa Maddison reports, the prime minister Kevin Rudd is in Mackay in the northern state of of Queensland, where he's holding a community cabinet meeting.

Federal cabinet has escaped the cold of Canberra and is instead enjoying a north Queensland winter.

As part of his election campaign, Kevin Rudd promised to take the government to the people and on Sunday it is in Mackay.

Mr Rudd arrived a short time ago and will hear from community members and interest groups on a range of issues.

Mr Rudd and the cabinet will attend a cocktail function tonight with a closed cabinet meeting to be held in the city Monday.
