Pakistan claims Khyber offensive successful
Updated
Pakistan's government claims it has saved the northwestern city of Peshawar from militants.
On Saturday the government had launched an operation to counter rebels threatening Peshawar and raiding supply convoys for NATO and US troops in Afghanistan.
An interior ministry official claims soldiers backed by armoured vehicles retook control of the main town in the Khyber tribal district and also demolished a building belonging to an Islamist insurgent group.
The government has been under increasing pressure from its western allies since it began peace talks with the militants.
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani denies the government was under pressure from Washington to launch the operation and said negotiations with militants would continue.
No indication has been given as to when the offensive would end.
