China vague on Zimbabwe embargo support

China doesn't appear to support United States calls for a United Nations arms embargo on Zimbabwe.

Robert Mugabe has been inaugurated as president for a sixth term after results showed he'd won 85 per cent of the vote in the uncontested run-off election.

The US Secretary of State says it is time for strong international action to stop political violence in the African nation.

Condoleezza Rice has met with her Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi in Beijing to discuss US plans to introduce measures this week at the UN Security Council.

China is one of the five veto-wielding permanent members of the UN Security Council, which also includes Russia, the United States, Britain and France.

It has given vague answers when asked if it supports an arms embargo.
