British diplomat beaten in Sri Lanka

A senior British High Commission officer in Sri Lanka has been beaten and his car smashed by unidentified attackers.

The attackers also tried to grab a journalist travelling as a passenger in the vehicle.

The British High Commissioner Officer, Mahendra Ratnaweera, was severely injured in the attack.

Freelance journalist Namal Perera also suffered serious injuries.

Mr Perera says he and Mr Ratnaweera were beaten with batons and clubs and escaped when a large group of bystanders gathered.

Both Mr Perera and Mr Ratnaweera are being treated for their injuries in hospital.
