Afghanistan suffers under global food crisis
Updated
International relief agency World Vision says the global food crisis is forcing some of the poor in Afghanistan to sell their daughters into early marriages.
Prices of food essentials such as wheat, barley, corn, rice are skyrocketing due to a combination of global and domestic factors.
These include rising oil prices, poor harvests and severe droughts.
World Vision says meals are becoming a luxury for many in Afghanistan where half the population live below the poverty line.
The international relief agency's 2008 report on the global food crisis says those who are in desperate situations are resorting to selling their children.
It says some are as young as seven when they become ''essentially bonded labor".
