US disappointed over Fiji's actions on Pacific working group

The United States is the latest aid donor nation to express disappointment at the Fiji interim government's decision to suspend involvement with the Pacific Forum Secretariat, and Fiji, Joint Working Group.

The Group was formed last year, to give forum member nations an opportunity to provide input and advice on Fiji's return to democratic rule.

A fortnight ago, the interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, announced the suspension of his government, saying the group was dominated by Australia and New Zealand.

In a statement released by the US Embassay in Fiji, Department of State spokesman Sean McCormack says the decision increases concerns about Fiji's willingness to keep its promise to hold elections next March.

Washington has called on Commodore Bainimarama to keep that promise.
