Samoan PM says Solomons' accident 'an embarrassment'
Updated
The prime minister of Samoa, Tuilaepa Sailele, says he is embarrassed over the involvement of two officers from his country's police force in a fatal accident in Solomon Islands.
Our Pacific correspondent, Campbell Cooney, says the two Samoan police officers were part of the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI) and both were involved in a traffic accident which left a Solomon Islands' woman dead.
One of them, recovering from injuries in a hospital in Australia, has refused to assist Solomons' police investigating the incident.
Samoa's prime minister, Tuilaepa Sailele, has told Radio Australia's Pacific Beat program the crash, and the officer's response is embarrassing to him and his country.
"Big embarrassment at that," he said.
"They have to behave like policemen, and comply and cooperate with the authorities."
Mr Sailele and the commissioner of Samoa police are travelling to Solomon Islands for its 30th anniversary celebrations, but will also be addressing the incident with RAMSI, the Samoan police contingent and the Solomon Islands' government.
