New research calls for greater emission cuts

New research warns that measures to cut greenhouse gases need to be improved to keep temperature increases below dangerous levels.

A report from the Australian National University says as global warming continues, the ability of the earth to absorb carbon will decline - thereby accelerating the rate of temperature change.

The report's principal author, Andrew Macintosh, says emission cuts required to keep the temperature rise below three degrees are far greater than previously thought.

Mr Macintosh says the current target of a 60 per cent emissions cut by 2050 is unlikely to be effective.

"Sixty percent is clearly inconsistent with trying to keep temperatures to two degrees and is more consistent with trying to keep temperatures to four degrees, so clearly outside of the bounds of what a large number of people are now saying is the trigger for dangerous climate change," he said.
