Capsized Philippine ferry to be refloated

Updated July 2, 2008 22:34:11

A ferry that sunk in the Philippines in a typhoon will be refloated in the latest effort to recover hundreds of bodies trapped inside.

Officials say the government and the ferry owners have abandoned a plan to bore a hole into the 24,000-tonne vessel to retrieve the bodies and a cargo of toxic pesticide that threatens the marine environment.

The ferry ran around and was sunk by huge waves as it tried to seek shelter during Typhoon Fengshe.

Only 57 of the 850 passengers and crew survived the disaster.
