Philippines and Thailand work on a military agreement
Updated
A military agreement between the Philippines and Thailand which will pave the way for the conduct of joint military exercises is currently in the works and may be approved soon.
This was the focus of a meeting between the Philippines military chief and the visiting supreme commander of the Royal Thai Armed Forces.
Philippine military chief Alexander Yano says the visit of Thailand's military commander and possible military exercises with Thailand signify the strong defence cooperation and security relations between the two countries.
The Status of Forces Agreement with Thailand has been finalised since 2006 but has yet to be approved by Filipino authorities.
A similar agreement has been signed with Australia last year and is pending ratification with the Philippine senate.
The Philippines has a current agreement with the United States to hold joint military exercises.
Meantime, Thailand will donate 100,000 US. dollars to the Philippines for relief and rehabilitation efforts after the onslaught of Typhoon Fengshen.
