Indian troops kill top rebel in Kashmir
Updated
Indian security forces say they have shot dead the alleged chief commander of the hardline Islamic militant group, Lashkar-e-Toiba.
Abu Atif and his bodyguard were killed during a fierce gun battle in the southern Kashmir district of Pulwama.
Police say Atif was involved in many attacks in Indian-held Kashmir and other parts of India.
The Lashkar-e-Toiba is seen as one of the most militant grouping in Kashmir.
More than 43,000 people have died in Kashmir since militants launched a separatist insurgency in 1989.
