Philippines pledges special courts to fight piracy

Updated July 4, 2008 03:55:51

The Philippines trade department says it will create a special court and law enforcement agency to combat rampant intellectual piracy and counterfeiting.

Trade Secretary Peter Favila says special courts to handle intellectual property cases would be created in Manila and possibly Cebu but he gave no timetable.

He says various departments including customs, police, justice and interior departments would be required to form permanent units to enforce the intellectual property Code.

Manila is on the US Trade Representative's watch list of countries because of book piracy, Internet piracy, and the illegal video camera recording of films in theatres.
