Job oppurtunities for Pacific Islanders in Guam

Updated July 4, 2008 12:14:12

Pacific Islanders have been told there's enormous job opportunities for them in Guam as a result of a United States military build up on the island.

The outgoing US ambassador to Fiji says job oppourtunities would come with the relocation of the United States airbase from Japan's southern island of Okinawa to Guam - a project that isn't expected to be completed until 2015.

Larry Dinger says the $US15 billion relocation would require a manpower pool beyond what's available in Guam.

Mr Dinger says construction companies awarded contracts will hire on the basis of skills and costs.

He says if Pacific Islanders have sufficient skills and the costs are competitive then there are going to be jobs for them.
