The White House has confirmed that US President George W Bush will attend the opening ceremonies of next month's Olympic Games in China.

Human rights activists including pro-Tibetan groups have been calling on world leaders to boycott the event.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy is still considering his response.

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino says Mr Bush is going to China to support American athletes.

Australia's prime minister, Kevin Rudd, confirmed his attendance two weeks ago, a decision that's been endorsed by opposition leader Brendan Nelson.
