Fiji's interim prime minister, Frank Bainimarama, has welcomed Australia's decision to approve the appointment of an acting high commissioner to Canberra.

The Australian government has notified the interim government of its decision to approve the acting high commissioner at the Fiji mission in Canberra, as well as a consular-general in Sydney.

However, the Fiji Times says Commodore Bainimarama asked why there was only an acting high commissioner, when there's a fully flegded high commission.

The military commander says he's also disappointed with the Australian governmment comments that referred to the interim government as a 'regime'.

Commodore Bainimarama says the statement shows Australia is not genuine in its dealings with his administration.
