Economic emergency in Marshall Islands

The Marshall Islands government has declared a state of economic emergency.

Radio Australia's Pacific Beat program reports the situation has been brought about by the impact of the rising cost of fuel.

It says the government will be forced to turn out the country's street lights at the end of August, if it fails to raise $US8.5 million for fuel by next weekend.

The money is needed to cover last month's diesel shipment, and a down payment on this month's.
