Japan boosts food aid ahead of G-8 meeting

Japan says it will give an extra $US50 million in aid to developing countries over the next three months, to help them cope with soaring global food prices.

The announcement has come three days before Japan hosts the Group of Eight summit of top industrial leaders.

The food crisis is set to be high on the agenda in Toyako, where the summit's being held, on the northern island of Hokkaido.

Japan's foreign minister says his country has made the fresh funding commitment because the situation remains serious, particularly in developing countries.

Japan has now pledged $US200 million to developing nations since the food crisis came into global focus earlier this year.
