More Australian troops to be sent to Afghanistan

Australia's Defence Force has signalled further deployments of troops to Afghanistan from the northern Australia city of Darwin over the next six months.

More than 400 troops who served in Iraq were recognised during a welcome home parade in Darwin on Saturday.

But it seems only a matter of time before their next overseas task.

Commander of First Brigade, Brigadier Michael Crause says the defence force is going to send in a mentoring liaison team specifically to train up the Afghan army to act in a security role.

"We'll remain busy now that we've withdrawn, it does give us the opportunity to do some extra training," he said.

"But I expect a fair portion of the brigade to be back in the Middle East and into Timor by the end of the year."
