Sri Lanka's rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam has commemorated 21 years of the practice of suicide bombings.
356 Black Tigers, the men and women who staged suicide attacks, were remembered in ceremonies in guerrilla-held Wanni region in the island's north east.
The pro-rebel Tamilnet.com web site reports the elusive Tiger supremo, Velupillai Prabhakaran led the remembrance ceremonies at an undisclosed location.
Although not credited with starting the lethal method, the Black Tigers have staged some of the world's most brazen attacks and are described as the most effective unit of its type anywhere in the world.
In July 2001 Black Tigers destroyed a large fleet of military aircraft at a base and went onto the adjoining international airport and bombed six civilian airliners parked there.
Last october 21 suicide bombers destroyed a fleet of aircraft in a key air base.
