Nation-wide cigarette ban considered in Niue

Updated July 7, 2008 11:33:00

Niue's Director of Health says a ban on cigarettes would mean a drop in government revenue from tobacco taxes but this would be more than off-set by savings in the health budget.

Dr Sitaleki Finau says smoking is a big problem, both economically and health-wise for Niue.

He's told Pacific Beat he's optimistic a successful ban on smoking in Tuapa village could persuade other villages to become smoke free.

"Very optimistic, and that's why there is optimism about a smoke free country," Dr Finau said.

"We feel there is optimism in relation to villages declaring themselves smoke-free."
