Drought research key for farming survival: Agforce

Updated July 7, 2008 12:49:21

Australian farm lobby group Agforce says increased funding for drought research will be one of the keys to saving the farming industry.

The Federal Government released a new report on Sunday on the links between drought and climate change.

The report found exceptionally high temperatures will now happen almost yearly and low rainfall will double in frequency.

AgForce Queensland chief executive, Brett De Hayr, says the Government must lead the way in helping farmers drought-proof properties, rather than focus on emergency assistance.

"We're going to need a significant investment in research and development, practice change, so people can alter what they are doing in line with our climate.

"It can be done, it's not all doom and gloom but we're going to need to have a significant national focus or otherwise we just can't keep doing what we have been doing," Mr De Hayr said.
