Government to consider lifting Sydney airport curfew

Australia's Federal Opposition says it remains opposed to any moves to relax Sydney Airport's curfew.

As part of its submission to a national aviation white paper, the country's largest international carrier Qantas has asked the Federal Government to consider relaxing the 11pm to 6am curfew.

But the Liberal member for Cook, Scott Morrison, says the curfew provides peace of mind for the many people in his electorate who live under the flight paths.

"The curfew and cap are totally uncompromisable from the point-of-view of the Liberal party," he said.

Sydney Airport is Australia's busiest; 31 million passengers passed through its terminals in 2006-2007.

The airport is eight kilometres from the city's centre, and has been subject to the 11pm to 6am curfew for more than 40 years.
