Chinese Olympic banknotes missing Mao image

Updated July 7, 2008 22:08:47

For the first time in almost ten years, China is issuing new banknotes without the image of Chairman Mao.

The new 10 yuan notes will instead feature Beijing's new Olympic stadium on the front and an ancient Greek statue of a discus thrower on the back.

Six million of the new Olympic banknotes will be issued but most notes in circulation will continue to feature Chairman Mao.

The move comes as organisers have made free Bibles in both English and Chinese bearing the Beijing Olympic logo available to athletes and tourists at next month's Games.

The China Daily says the China Christian Council has printed 50,000 copies of the Bible and New Testament as well as booklets with the four gospels which will be available in churches and the athletes' village.
