Australia's Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, flies to Japan today to attend the meeting of the G8 on the northern island of Hokkaido.

Climate change will be one of the main topics on the agenda when Mr Rudd joins G8 leaders and others as part of the major economies meeting.

The leaders will discuss climate change and are expected to debate the issue of firm greenhouse gas emission reduction targets but there's no optimism leaders will commit to binding targets.

They are also expected to discuss the global economic outlook, and rising oil and food prices and the impact that is having on developing nations.

Mr Rudd will have several side meetings with individual leaders, possibly including India and Brazil, where he'll target specific issues such as climate change and the delicately poised world trade negotiations.

Mr Rudd will travel to Malaysia for a day of meetings on Thursday.
