Hopes Australian wage rise recognises living costs pressure

Updated July 8, 2008 13:31:48

Australian unions are hoping for a $AU26 rise in the minimum weekly wage, in a Fair Pay Commission decision expected today.

The minimum award wage is currently just above $522 a week.

The Australian Council of Trade Unions Secretary, Jeff Lawrence, says the increase will help offset the rising cost of living.

"We are hopeful that they will recognise that Australian workers are under significant pressure from increases in prices for petrol, housing, increases in food prices and take some step to address that," Mr Lawrence said.
