FIFA watching PNG soccer elections
Updated
World soccer's governing body, FIFA, is warning a group of five former Papua New Guinea Football Association members that they will be disciplined for taking court action to overturn recent election results.
Our sports reporter, Tanya O'Shea, says the group - office bearers who failed to regain their positions at the July 5 annual general meeting - is trying to get the election overturned.
The PNG National newspaper reports that a group of disgruntled members applied for a court order to stop PNG soccer's annual general meeting.
The meeting went ahead with the incumbent president returned by majority.
In an email seen by Radio Australia, FIFA has promised legal support.
Oceania Football Confederation general secretary Tai Nicholas says FIFA takes a dim view of those who try to overturn democratic process.
"This sets a bad precedent for football administration around the world so Fifa is coming down hard on those who are taking court action to review that decision," he said.
