Afghanistan, UN say 404 million dollars needed to feed the poor
Updated
The Afghan government and the United Nations have launched a 404-million dollar appeal to help feed 4.5 million vulnerable Afghans.
Vice President Mohammad Karim Khalili says rising global food prices combined with poor crop harvests in Afghanistan and a drought have pushed millions in the already impoverished country below the poverty line.
Speaking to a board of donors, ambassadors and aid agencies Mr Khalili said without international assistance Afghanistan would be heading towards a human tragedy.
The UN's deputy special representative to Afghanistan Bo Asplund says the situation has become "more dire" since the last appeal launched in January.
