Pro-Taliban militants surround police station in northwest Pakistan

Police in Pakistan's restive Northwest Frontier Province say around 200 pro-Taliban militants have surrounded a police station demanding the release of suspected extremists.

The tense standoff was triggered after police and paramilitary forces patrolling in Hangu district arrested seven suspected militants.

Local police station chief Jehangir Khan says the seven militants have been shifted to another station but about 35 police personnel in Doaaba police station are still surrounded by armed Taliban.

Police reinforcements have been called in while a jirga, or committee of local elders, is making efforts to resolve the matter amicably.
