China steps up security ahead of Olympics
Updated
In the latest security move ahead of the Beijing Olympics, tourists will be banned from visiting China's prestigious Peking University.
The Xinhua news agency says teachers, students and staff will have to show identity cards or passes to get onto campus.
The campus is where Olympic and Paralympic table tennis events will be held.
China has embarked on a wide-ranging security crackdown ahead of the Games, including the deployment of surface-to-air missile batteries near Olympic venues to defend against airborne terrorist attacks.
Authorities in the capital have also started carrying out checks in the subway.
The country has repeatedly warned it faces the threat of terror attacks on the Olympics, particularly from "separatists" in its far-western Xinjiang region, which is predominantly Muslim.
