There is increased media speculation that Malaysia's prime minister, Abdullah Badawi, is to announce plans to resign in June 2010.
Party officials have told news agencies Mr Badawi is seeking his party's approval to hand over to deputy Najib Razak, ending months of political uncertainty.
Malaysian MP and daughter of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, Nurul Izzah Anwar, told Radio Australia's Asia Pacific program any possible announcement is already coming too late.
"People have lost confidence in the government of the day," she said.
"People have lost confidence in the prime minister and his leadership and they feel that even after such a strong message was sent, in the last general election, they've been very reluctant to basically heed the views of the people.
"Such announcements, and they're talking about 2010, it's clearly very delayed and really doesn't show much promise of a real change taking place."
